CO I 31st. IOWA INFANTRY, Civil War Veteran. Died in service on the Floating Hospital Ship "Nashville" of chronic diarrhea at the beginning of the siege of Vicksburg.

Artimus C. Stevens b. Jan 10, 1816 in Vermont. Records show he owned land in Chittenden Co. Vermont in 1836. He resided in Ohio in 1843 and married Amartha Ann Allen on Feb 22, 1843 in Crawford CO, Bucyrus, Ohio. Amartha Ann Allen was born Nov 29, 1827 in Ohio. They resided in Ohio until 1856 when they moved to Jackson CO. Iowa. They located on a farm in Richland Township, Cottonville, near La Motte, Iowa
Artimus and family were living in Iowa when the Civil War broke out. Their oldest son, Jonas enlisted in the Union Army when he was 17. He died in Service the next year on Jun 27, 1862 in a tragic accident. He was drying powder when it exploded and he was badly burned and only lived a few hours.
Artimus was grief-stricken and enlisted to fight against the South. Artimus enlisted in Company I., 31st Regiment and was mustard into the Union Army on Aug 21, 1862 at Davenport, IA. Seven months later he too gave his life for the Union cause. Artimus C. Stevens died on the Floating Hospital Ship "Nashville" on Mar 19, 1863 of chronic diarrhea at the beginning of the siege of Vicksburg. His body was brought back to Iowa and he is buried in the Cottonville Cemetery, near Andrew, IA.
