Jacob P. "Jake" Bakker, age 69, of Wheatfield passed away on March 24, 2014. He was born on October 24, 1944 in Hammond, IN, the son of Jacob and Trinja (Lolkema) Bakker, both deceased.
Jacob served his country proudly in the United States Army in the Vietnam Conflict from December 1, 1966 through November 29, 1968. He was a decorated Veteran and was the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars.
On June 26, 1970, in Oak Lawn, IL, Jacob married Magdalena Leistra. Together they lived in Wheatfield, IN for 37 years.
Jacob enjoyed the reunions of the 1st Infantry Division, known as "The Big Red One." He was a member of the Wheatfield American Legion. Jacob was a self-employed Bricklayer with Tri-County Masonry. Jacob was a member of the Immanuel United Reformed Church in DeMotte, IN.
Jacob was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all. He is survived by his loving wife, Magdalena; children: Peter Jacob (Beth), Andrew John (Shannon), and Tina Marie (John); five grandchildren: Tyler, Katelyn, Abigail, Jacob and Emmelene; brothers: Albert (Alvina), Theodore (Ora) and a brother-in-law Robert. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Theresa.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Service in DeMotte, IN. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel United Reformed Church in DeMotte, IN, with Rev. Wetselaar officiating. Interment will be in the Holland Cemetery.
