Hawera & Normanby Star, 29 Jan 1910
Many early settlers in Taranaki will regret to learn of the death of Mr Ilay Robert Stanners, who for a period of 24 years occupied the position of Government overseer in the Waste Lands Department and inspector of lands sold under the deferred payment system.
The deceased gentleman lived at Ngaere for over 20 years, until July 1904, when he left for England with his wife and family. About four months ago he left England for Canada with the intention of settling there. On the voyage to Canada the steamer in which he sailed struck an uncharted rock, but managed to reach port in a sinking condition. On arrival in Canada, Mr and Mrs Stanners and their daughter took the train for 'Saska' where they intended settling. Early on the journey the train was delayed, and in attempting to make up lost time left the rails and ran into a cutting.
About 20 passengers were injured, including Mr Stanners, whose injuries were regarded as somewhat serious from the outset. In addition to other injuries several pieces of broken glass entered his face and body. The whole of the glass was not taken out by the doctors, and after lingering a couple of months Mr Stanners died at Saska on the 25th inst.
Mrs Stanners and her daughter fortunately escaped from the accident without injury.
The deceased gentleman was a brother to Messrs H., T.C., and W.W. Stanners, of Eltham

The large headstone to the right is that of Ilay Robert Stanners junior & his wife Sarah at Regina cemetery, Saskatchewan
