Biography. George MacFarlane was born on November 17, 1878, in Frontenac, Ontario, Canada as George Jarvis McFarlane. He was an actor, known for Half Shot at Sunrise (1930), The Painted Angel (1929), and Fireman, Save My Child (1932). He died on February 22, 1932, in Hollywood, California, USA.

Had also been a well-known singer who performed in comic operas, musical comedies, and as a solo artist. Was billed as "America's Favorite Baritone".

Produced Broadway hits "Honest Liar" and "Rainbow Road".

Struck and killed by an automobile as he was crossing a street to mail a letter. McFarlane had been in a hurry to attend the premier of his latest movie.

2nd wife, singer Viola Gillette, was appearing in an Al Jolson show when her husband was killed.

Sketch. George MacFarlane was born in 1878 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The youngest of six children. Although he began by selling soap, he always loved the stage and without formal training, George was able to gain singing experience in Montreal.

George MacFarlane was dazzled by the brighter lights of America and soon moved south. Performing on Broadway brought great successes for him as well as introducing him to his wife, Viola Pratt Gillette, an actress from Salt Lake City, Utah.

In April 1909, MacFarlane landed the role of Jacques Baccarel in The Beauty Spot being performed at Broadway's Herald Square Theatre. At the time of W.S. Gilbert's passing in 1911, much interest was born in Gilbert and Sullivan giving MacFarlane more of a chance to show off his beautiful baritone voice through their operettas.

MacFarlane got the chance to record some of the music he was making famous on Broadway. He recorded "Can't You Hear Me Calling, Caroline?" which became one of the hits of 1914.

He recorded under the Victor label from 1914-1917 and recorded under the Columbia label after Victor. He had recordings that were popular during WWI such as "When You Come Back (And You Will Come Back)". Among MacFarlane's notable recordings for Victor were songs from Broadway shows and "Too-ra-loo-ra!"

Between 1929 and his death in 1932, he appeared in a total of 15 feature films. He divided his time between New York and Hollywood performing on both Broadway and in motion pictures.

On Monday, February 22, 1932, George MacFarlane was struck and killed by a car in Los Angeles. He was 55 years old.
