Philosopher, Essayist and Writer. He was born in Valladolid and died in Madrid, Spain. He was the disciple and friend of philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. He began his work in magazines such as 'Cruz y Raya' and 'Cuadernos de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras.' After the Spanish Civil War, he was enjailed during a time, for his fight against the Franco's dictatorship. In 1941, he published in the magazine Revista de Occidente, his work 'Historia de la Filosofía' and later, 'Miguel de Unamuno' and 'El Tema del Hombre.' In 1942, his university thesis was vetoed and because of this in the 1950s, he worked as teacher in Universities of California, Harvard, Yale and Puerto Rico. In 1964, he was elected member of Real Academia de la Lengua and also he was member of Academia de Artes y Ciencias de Puerto Rico, Hispanic Society of America and member of 'Council of Scholars' in the Library of Congress of United States. In 1977, he was elected senator for royal designation. Among his books: 'Ortega y la Idea de Razón Vital,' 'El Existencialismo en España,' 'Los Españoles,' 'El Oficio del Pensamiento,' 'La Mujer en el Siglo XX' and 'Los Problemas del Cristianismo.' He published his memories with the title 'Una Vida Presente.' He obtained the award Príncipe de Asturias in 1996. He was married with writer Dolores Franco and was the father of noted writer Javier Marías, cinema critic Miguel, Musician Álvaro and Art Professor Fernando.
