Son of James and Sarah Ward Pittillo. He married Polly Ann Prewitt. It was her third marriage and his first. They had three children, Susan, John, and Almira.

He is buried with his mother , Sarah, and near his brother,Jefferson W. Pittillo.

Norm Brown is writing a book titled Forgotten Cow Herders of the Texas Frontier, in which he tells the story of Hamp Pittillo's disagreement with Matt Mann over a race. Later Hamp killed Mann, and two months later Mann's son killed Hamp.
