Dr. Sara Davies

Obstetrician Attended 3,800 Toledo Births

Dr. Sara Davies, 84, who, as one of Toledo's oldest practicing obstetricians, brought 3,800 babies into the world since 1900, died late yesterday in Riverside Hospital after a brief illness. She had maintained offices at 1025 Greenwood Ave. since 1905.

Coming to Toledo in 1900, Dr. Davies, began a career that was to earn her the informal title of "Dr. Stork, in person." From her first office at 435 East Broadway she walked all over the city to attend to her cases.

Bought First Auto
In 1905, Dr. Davies bought her first automobile. She later traded it for a horse and buggy, which she used for many years. During her half-century of delivering babies to Toledo mothers, Dr. Davies kept a close record of every birth in a diary. This record proved invaluable to persons who had lost their birth certificates and was particularly useful during the last war when birth certificates were required for many jobs.

The diary, now in the possession of Russell Davies, 461 Parker Ave., a nephew, is 4 inches wide, 7 inches long and 1 inch thick. Into it, in her own handwriting, had gone a description of every birth Dr. Davies attended, the parent's names and other important data.

Proud of Record
Dr. Davies was proud of her record of delivering babies through the generations of a family. In one family, for example, she delivered a baby, both its parents and two grandparents.

In addition to her help as a family doctor, Dr. Davies acted as counselor to many of her patients through all types of crises. She carried on a wide general practice in addition to her work as an obstetrician, and had continued practice until shortly before she entered the hospital for observation Jan. 22.

Born in Columbus Grove, O., Dr. Davies was graduated from the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College. She was a member of the Zonta Club and Second Congregational Church.

Survivors Listed
Surviving are her sister, Leah, who lived with her; Mr. Davies, who was reared by Dr. Davies; another sister, Mrs. O. M. Thomas, Lima, O., and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the Eggleston-Meinert Mortuary by Rev. George D. Wigfield, pastor of Second Congregational Church. Burial will be in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
