Bushnell was a veteran cartoonist. He was a farmhand, cowboy, mill foreman, deckman and beer garden porter before joining the Cleveland Press as an artist. He later worked for the Cincinnati Post and did cartooning for the Cincinnati Times-Star, Memphis News-Scimitar, New York Globe and Journal. In addition, he did a cartoon act in vaudeville for several seasons.
