1921-2008

Jose "Red" A. Sanchez, age 87, a life-long resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2008. He was born to the late Francisco and Cresicena Sanchez, in 1921. Jose was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he made 4th Degree Knight. As a young man, Jose proudly served his country in the US Army during the WWII conflict where he was wounded twice. He earned a Bronze medal and two Purple Heart medals. Jose came back from the service to marry the love of his life, Elia Chavez on March 26, 1945. Many knew him for owning the U&R Shoe Store for 10 years. Jose also worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for nine years. He was also preceded in death by his son, Joe Herman, Jr., three brothers, Alfredo, Celidon and Roy and two sisters, Clotilda and Marina. Jose is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elia Chavez Sanchez; five loving children, Judy Sanchez Vernon, Agnes Sanchez Aragon and husband, Bert, Louise Sanchez Adler and husband, George, Gerald Sanchez and wife, Lorraine and Roseanne Sanchez Sisneros and husband, Leroy; two loving brothers, Sam and Ernest Sanchez; one loving sister, Lucinda Chavez; 11 loving grandchildren, James, Juanita, Cody, Shannon, Nicole, Clay, Anthony, Izaak, Carlos, Joseph and Daniel; and eight loving great-grandchildren, Christopher, Allesya, Logan, Adden, Syndey, Noah, Anthony and Cole. A rosary was held at Romero Funeral Home on Monday, October 13 and a Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 14. Interment followed at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
