Elected as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania's 15th Congressional District in the Seventy-fourth Congress, he served from 1935 to 1937. Born in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston in 1907. In 1914 he opened Tunkhannock's first Nikelodeon for the showing of movies, and this would be his primary occupation for the rest of his life. From 1924 he also operated a farm. Defeated for reelection to Congress in 1936, he returned to Tunkhannock. In 1936 he built the Dietrich Theatre in his hometown, which remains a local landmark and still operates under that name.
