Gen John Summerfield Griffith
Birth: Jun. 17, 1829
Death: Aug. 6, 1901

Civil War Confederate Militia General. At the start of the Civil War he enlisted, as a captain in the Sixth Texas Calvary, Company B. He saw action in battles at Elkhorn Tavern and Oak Hills. On December 20, 1862, he led a raid on the Union Arsenal at Holly Springs, Mississippi. The raid forced General Ulysses S. Grant to withdraw his entire army (75,000 troops) from the state. The future United States President barely escaped capture during the raid. On March 1, 1864 he was commissioned a Brigadier General in the State forces of Texas. (bio by: Bigwoo)
