James A. Arbuckle, 91, of Meadville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Niles, Ohio, a son of the late Clarence George and Mildred Beulah Williams Arbuckle. He married Lizzie May Steck on July 14, 1944. She preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 2011.

After graduating from Sheakleyville High School in 1940, he then attended tool and die apprenticeship school. He was employed as a tool and die maker at Talon Inc. in Meadville.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the USS Bell, with the rank of fire controlman lc V-6. James entered the service on Aug. 20, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 28, 1945.

While residing in Sheakleyville, James was a member of Sheakleyville United Methodist Church and had been very active with Sheakleyville Volunteer Fire Department. After moving to Meadville, he attended Stone United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. James truly enjoyed the time he spent with all of his relatives.

He is survived by two daughters, Kay E. Steen and her husband, Wayne, of Fredonia, and Christine A. Shafer of Meadville; two sons, James L. Arbuckle and his wife, Pharita, of Meadville, and John D. Arbuckle and his wife, Kim, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jason Steen and his wife, Megan, of Pittsburgh, Kendra Hartman and her husband, Gary, of Mercer, Lindsey Shafer of Garrettsville, Ohio, Zane Shafer of Newbury, Ohio, and Charles Arbuckle of Meadville; three great-grandchildren, Delaney, Cole and Kennedy; a sister, Helen Petrie of Mercer; two brothers, David Arbuckle and his wife, Sandy of Cochranton, and Loyd Arbuckle and his wife, Bonnie, of Cochranton; and his special caregiver, Shannon Sanden of Centerville.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Arbuckle and Wayne Arbuckle; and an infant brother.

Family and friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home & Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville, and from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, with full Military Honors presented by VFW Post 2006, prior to the service.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Philip Torre of First Assembly of God, Meadville, officiating. Burial will take place in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Vernon Township.
