Son of Samuel Irwin and Lee Anna KERR, he served in the Civil War - mustered into Company I, 1st West Virginia Infantry, November 5, 1861, at Wheeling, W. Va. Transferred to the Non-Commissioned Staff, December 31, 1861, by order of Colonel Joseph Thoburn, Quarter-Master Sgt.

He married Mary Jane/ Jennie LITTLE, October 9, 1867, by Rev. Wm. Mullenix at the First Presbyterian Church, Wheeling.

David Kerr Irwin's sister Mary Ellen married William Thomas Singleton, another Civil War soldier.
