Johannes G. Mohn was born in Germany on January 5, 1755. At age 21, he was conscripted into the Hessian army where he was assigned to the von Knyphausen Regiment as a fusilier and sent to America by British transport ship during the Revolutionary War, arriving in New York harbor in the spring of 1776. Later, after the First Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776, he was taken prisoner by Washington's army and eventually sent to a prisoner of war camp in Allentown, PA where he helped to make shoes for the Continental Army. After the war, he worked as a farm hand and shoemaker in Springfield Township (Bucks County), PA until he had saved enough money to buy some farm land and to start his own family. He married Catarina Metzger (b. 1774 d. 1827) about 1794, and they moved to Williams Township where he again worked as a farmhand. Johannes and Catarina eventually had two daughters and three sons, including Elisabeth (b. 1795 d. 1855), Christina (b. 1797 d. 1872), John G. Jr. (b. 1800 d. 1857) - see Memorial #46104708, Henry F. (b. 1803 d. 1876) - see Memorial #72914005, and Peter (b. 1806 d. 1888) - see Memorial #64919992. About 1803, Johannes and his family moved to Plainfield Township, PA, near Belfast, PA. Then, about 1806, the Mohn family moved to Lower Smithfield Township (near the Delaware Water Gap) where Johannes worked to manage the Metzger farm that had formerly been owned and operated by his wife's parents. About 1813, the Metzger farm was sold in accordance with Johannes Metzger's Will, and the Mohn family returned to farm in the newly-formed Bushkill Township. The Mohn farmhouse was then located where St. Luke's United Church of Christ (later erected and dedicated in 1829) now stands. Johannes G. Mohn died in Bushkill Township on Jan. 6, 1822 at the age of 67 and was buried behind the farmhouse at a location which today is known as the "Old Section" of Belfast Union Cemetery. His grave marker is now very weather-worn and difficult to read, but careful analyses of the marker face have revealed the following inscription: IN MEMORY OF Johannes G Mohn born Jan 5 1755 died Jan 6 1822. It is believed that his burial was one of the first, if not THE first, in this cemetery.
