He farmed and blacksmithed until about 1940 when he became a carpenter. He later became a homebuilder in and around Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals, Al. He served as an elder for the Spring Valley Church of Christ for about the last 30 years of his life. He married Alice Kiser Isbell and they had four children: James H., Janie Sockwell (Oneal), Raymond E., and Amizona Howard (Clarice G).
Their son Raymond E. Isbell became a chemist, worked in propellant research, slow release nitrogen fertilizer research for 7 years, and became a professor at the University of North Alabama (33 years) and served as Head of the Chemistry Department for 17 years. He is the author of several books.
