Journalist. He is best remembered as the editor-in-chief of Newsweek Magazine during the 1950s and the New York Herald in the 1960s. At the age of 16 he began working in the newspaper business as a journalist for the Washington Herald. During the Korean War he was a correspondent for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and prior to that he worked other newspaper jobs for the New York World-Telegram, the Chicago Times, the Chicago Herald American, and the New York Journal-American. In 1952 he joined Newsweek as an associate editor and was appointed the managing editor the following year. In January 1956 he became Newsweek's editor-in-chief and remained in that position until resigning in March 1961 to become the editor-in-chief of the New York Herald Tribune. In January 1978 he joined the New York Tribune and when it folded later that year, he retired and moved to Fort Lauderdale and then Palm Beach Shores, Florida. He died in a nursing home in West Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 79.
