Birth: 1805
Death: 1848

Sarah Flower (her maiden name) was born in Harlow, Essex, and first tried to leave her mark as an actress playing Lady Macbeth in 1837. After this, however, she became a poet (Vivia Perpetua) and a Unitarian hymn writer. Her most famous hymn, 'Nearer My God To Thee', became legendary as the song played by the band on the sinking Titanic. She was a scion of a well-known Unitarian family, who counted the likes of John Stuart Mill and John Forster among their friends. Sarah, her father, husband and sister Eliza Flower all have entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Everything happens for a reason. No one would have remembered you if you became the actress you wanted to be. RIP.
