| Birth: | Sep. 11, 1820 | | Death: | Mar. 21, 1881 |  US Congressman. A graduate of Union College in Schenectady, New York, he was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1841. He served in the Indiana State Legislature, and was elected as a Republican to represent Indiana's 11th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1855 to 1861, and chose not to run for reelection. He was an active supporter for the Union cause once the Civil War started, and helped recruit the 75th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was commissioned it's Colonel and commander on August 19, 1862, but remained behind after it completed it's training and went into the field, and resigned his commission on October 24, 1862. He served a year in the Indiana State Legislature again (serving as Speaker of the House in 1865), and was an Indiana State Court Judge from 1872 to 1880.
