U.S. Congressman. Educated as a civil engineer, he was appointed by the State of Pennsylvania to make and report on a map of Washington County in 1816. Elected as Pennsylvania Washington County Commissioner, he assisted in the preliminary surveys of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and the national road between Cumberland, Maryland and Wheeling, Virginia. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was secretary of the first agricultural society organized in Washington County. Entering politics, he was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1822 to 1828). In addition, he entered the service of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company and was appointed chief engineer of that company, serving (1830 to 1842). In 1855, he was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural interests until his death.
