She was born Velma Esther Frank in Huntington County to the late Charles W. and Lois L. (Coulter) Frank. She graduated from Jefferson Center in 1936 and Ball State University in 1940. She taught in Huntington County Schools at Lancaster Elementary School and retired in 1984 after 30 years of teaching. She also taught at Union, Banquo and Jefferson Center. She belonged to the Better Living Home Economics Club and Neighborhood (or Pastime Club), both of Huntington County, and a lifetime member of Mount Etna Wesleyan Church, where she played piano and was superintendent and taught Sunday school.

Survivors include children, James (Connie) Martin, Newburg, Jorita (David C.) Banter, Huntington, Charles F. (Brenda) Martin, Chipley, Fla., and David (Sara) Martin, Vernon, Fla.; grandchildren, Kim Banter, Markle, Troy (Deanna) Martin, Colorado Springs, Colo., Trent (Holly) Martin, Newburgh, N.Y., Carrie (Chad) Walsingham, Chipley, Fla., Gabe (Anna) Martin and Walker Martin, both of Panama City, Fla., and Christine (Wes) Sweigert, Fort Wayne; and five great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Michael G. Martin; siblings, Olaf and Annabelle Frank; and a grandson, Steven Banter.
