On the 1850 Census, Tom (William) was listed as a farmer in Titus County, Texas living with his parents. He entered the mercantile business in Daingerfield, Texas just before the Civil War. He enlisted in a volunteer company, but then hired a substitute. He was finally conscripted when the law permitting substitutes was repealed. He returned to the mercantile business (Connor Brothers) after the war in partnership with his brother, William Mayo Connor. On the 1870 Census, he was listed as a merchant in Mt. Pleasant, Texas with his wife Eliza, sons Clay and Willie, and daughters Susan, Ella, Lou, and Maude. On the 1880 Census, he was listed as a merchant in Morris County, Texas with his wife Elizabeth, sons Willie, Orange, and Monty, and daughters Ella, Lou, Maude, and Etta. On the 1900 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Morris County, Texas with his wife Elizabeth (merchant) and sons Orange (merchant) and Monticue. On the 1910 Census, he was listed in Morris County, Texas living with his daughter Ludie and son-in-law Levi Turner. On the 1920 Census, he was listed in Daingerfield, Texas living with his son Monticue.
