Assassination Conspirator. He was the last surviving conspirator in the assassination of Indian independence leader and pacifist Mohandas Gandhi on January 30, 1948. His brother Nathuram, who shot Gandhi, killing him and other extremists, were hanged. He served 16 years in jail for his involvement and always remained unrepentant for his role in killing Gandhi. In a 2003 interview with Associated Press he stated, We did not want this man to live, Gandhi turned his back on Hindus, allowing British India to be divided in 1947 into today's states of India and Pakistan. After his release from jail, he lived until his death in Pune, India, financed by royalties from books he wrote on Gandhi and the assassination.
