Charles Russell Simmons was born Jan. 16, 1846, at Whitehall, Indiana. When 11 years old, he came with his parents to North English, Iowa, and grew to manhood there, eventually engaging in farming and railroad work.
On October 8, 1868, he was married to Maria A. Rock at Holbrook, Iowa, who was a faithful companion to him until her death in 1919. Five children were born to their union. One died in infancy and another, Frank C. Cimmons, passed away in 1929. Those surviving are: Thomas E. Simmons of Corpus Christi, Tex., John B. of Dallas, Tex., and Agnes at home; also by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In 1886 he and the family moved to the vicinity of Lake View living on a farm between here and Sac City. In 1891 they came to Lake View, where Mr. Simmons engaged in the lumber business until 1909. Later on he was associated for a number of years with his son, John B. Simmons, in a gravel pit business known as the Sacton Sand & Gravel Co.
Since the death of Mrs. Simmons their daughter Agnes has cared for the home and has been a devoted and loving companion to her aged father.
Mr. Simmons was a man of strong physique, and although in latter years his eyesight has been greatly impaired by cataracts, he enjoyed walking about and continued to take a great interest in world affairs and the activities of his community. He retained his mental faculties in spite of his four score years and ten.
Although his advanced age and continued failing health prepared his relatives in some measure for his departure, still his death at this season of the year has cast a shadow of grief over the family and he will be greatly missed.
Those present from a distance to pay their last measure of respect were J.R. Simmons and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Phillips and children of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. Carl Butler, Mr. and Mrs. James Herdliska, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Markwell, G.N. The ladies are granddaughters of Mr. Simmons. A son of the decedent Ernie (Thos. E.) is ill at Robsport, near Corpus Christi and was unable to be present for the last rites.
