The immigrant John Allen came to America from Ireland in 1713. Of Quaker faith, before leaving he received a Certificate of Removal to Friends in Pennsylvania, a certificate he presented to Newark Monthly Meeting (later Kennett MM) on 13 May 1713.
It is known that his father's name was also John, but his mothers name, any siblings he may have had or details about his early life is not currently known. It is known that he was a bricklayer by trade.
About the time that John arrived, land was being opened for purchase and John bought 63 acres in London Grove township. Here he built and operated one of the earliest grist mills. In 1719, he purchased 200 acres next door in New Garden township.
On 14 Mar 1719, John requests a certificate to Center Friends Preparatory Meeting, in Delaware, to marry "Ami Cocks." On 4 Apr 1719 at Newark MM, they announce their marriage intentions and on 2 May 1719 they are reportedly married.
John and Amy had nine children: John III (so named here to differentiate him from his father and grandfather, but in Indiana records he is often referred to as "John Jr"), Rebecca, Emey/Amy, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Mary, Phebe and Benjamin. (see photo).
In 1724, John was one of 42 taxable persons in London Grove, owing 8 shillings. In 2023, that amount is equal to about $47 and would be the wages that a skilled tradesman would earn in about 4 days.
John Allen wrote his last will and testament on 7 December 1769.
Church records show that John Allen Jr., (as well as his son John Allen II, and his grandson, Thomas Allen) are all buried at London Grove FBG, but because of the Quaker tradition of an unadorned grave, headstones have not been found.
