Birth: 1789
Bern
Bern, Switzerland
Death: May 1, 1847
New York, USA

Pierre's first name is documented as William while teaching at West Point. Family members believe it is actually his middle name. Until other documentation is found to prove William is his first name it will remain as is on this memorial.

The Secretary of War appointed Pierre as the first sword master at West Point, his tenure from 1814 to 1825.In 1825 he took a position as sword master at the ALS&M Academy (American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy).

John H. B. Latrobe, a member of the Class of 1822, wrote the following on his teacher Pierre Thomas in his book West Point Reminiscences from September, 1818, to March, 1882. "This list of our "teachers and masters" at West Point would not be complete were I to omit the bright little man, active as a cat, who, with a padded shield on his right breast, with a scarlet star thereof, and a wire mask on his face, was our teacher of the art of fencing Mr. Pierre Thomas, eke, the dancing master of the children in the families on the Point. I fancy that I see him now going through the formal salute in fencing, or sending the foil flying out of my hand, by way of teaching me to hold it firmly."

Pierre was a medical student and surgeon's mate in the French Imperial Navy.

Pierre married Phebe Winfield - #104380798, on Feb 20, 1814
They had 4 children:
Augustus (b)Mar 15, 1815 (d)Nov 15, 1868 - #90705094
Mary Winfield (b)May 14, 1816 (d)1880-1883
Catherine Sarah (b)Feb 6, 1818 (d)Jan 9, 1897 - #8455778
Chas Davis (b)Mar 26, 1819 (d)Oct 15, 1835

Mary Winfield is most likely buried in Washtenaw Co, Michigan as that was her last place of residence in 1880. Chas Davis is most likely buried in New York as his father lived in New York from the time he came to America.

Pierre married Harriet Bradford Brainard on Aug 6, 1826. They had seven children:
Harriet E. (b)Jun 28,1828 (d)aft 1860
Henrietta B.(b)Nov 11,1829 (d)Dec 29,1829
P. W. (b)Mar 17,1831 (d)Feb 28,1835
Louise Henrietta (b)Apr 7,1832 (d)Nov 28,1899
Pierre William (b)Oct 3,1834 (d)Dec 6,1893 - #3294551
Jane Amelia (b)Apr 2,1837 (d)Aug 31,1837
Chas Davis (b)Mar 31,1840 (d)Nov 12,1845

The family of Pierre wishes to express many thanks to Joyce Thomas, Find A Grave contributor and researcher in Ohio, Debra Eaton, Find A Grave contributor and researcher in Utah, and Barbara Medamana, a descendant of Pierre's and researcher, for their efforts and success in this project.
