John "Jack" Whiteford, 79, of East Jordan, died Monday, January 27, 2014, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on February 14, 1934, in East Jordan, the son of Hugh and Carol (Green) Whiteford.
He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1952.

On June 23, 1956, in East Jordan, he married Greta Derenzy.
They made their home in East Jordan to raise a family.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. He enjoyed watching football and baseball games. In fact, he loved to watch anything that his grandchildren were participating in.
Mostly, he just loved spending time with his family.

Jack had been a mechanic. He was once the co-owner of the Pure Gasoline Station in East Jordan but had worked many years at the East Jordan Co-op.
He also was a member of the East Jordan Fire Department from the early 1950s to 1966.

Jack is survived by five children, John (Sandi) Whiteford, Tammy (Bill) Thompson, Debra (Jeff) Hammond, Denise (Denny) Graham and Rhonda Whiteford all of East Jordan; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Eleanor) Whiteford of Traverse City; three sisters, Bethany (Gary) Norton of Ludington, Natalie (Myron "Mike") Postmas of Ellsworth and Diane Whiteford of Charlevoix; many nieces and nephews; as well as a very special friend and classmate, Sue Stallard of East Jordan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Greta F. Whiteford on February 25, 2007, one grandson, Daniel Paul Whiteford on October 16, 2005, and sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Turk Bennett.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at the Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan. Rev. James L. Jordan will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at Morehouse Cemetery in Echo Township, Antrim County, MI.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan. Memorials may be given to the East Jordan Ambulance Association.
