Navy Veteran - Korean War
Dale Dillingham, age 82, of Bakersfield passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014. He was born to the late Athol and Mary Dillingham, October 3, 1931, in Oakdale Ca. Dale graduated from Stockton High School and received a BS degree in Physical Education from Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, Ca in 1959 and went on to earn his Masters Degree. He joined the Navy out of high school and served on board the USS Hornet (CV-21) during the Korean Conflict. He was with the Hornet during her around-the-world tour during which time he reached the rank of Petty Officer First Class while performing duties as an aircraft
Dale married his first wife and mother of their four children on March 19, 1955. Shortly thereafter he began his teaching career, first in Fontana and then a year later at Wasco Union High School where he would spend the rest of his professional career. While mostly teaching science, Dale was active in many other aspects of teaching and interacting with generations of Wasconians. Early on in his career he coached football and wrestling. While his children were in high school, he took on the additional jobs of Athletic Director and Director of Student Activities. He also taught Drivers Education and brought learning into the homes of those unable to attend regular classes at the school. Dale retired from teaching in 1996 and moved to Bakersfield where he spent his remaining years with his wife of 30 years, Mary Jane.
Dale is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, daughter, Mary Sue Powell and son-in-law Jay, son, Jim Dillingham and daughter-in-law Erika, daughter Gwen Schroeder and son-in-law Phillip, daughter Patty Hoffman and step-daughter Mary Morgan-Harris and son-in-law Leon. Dale also leaves behind his sister, Phyllis Nance, his grandchildren: Abigail Harris, Brooke Smothers-Strizic, Jeff Smothers, Lauren Schroeder, Kellen Schroeder, David Hoffman, Avery Hoffman, Ryan Dillingham, Cory Dillingham and Matt Dillingham as well as his three great-grandchildren: Alison Henson, Bryan Henson and Caitlyn Henson. He is missed not only by his immediate family but also by generations of Wasco Union High School Alumni; many of whom have reached out to the Dillingham family to share fond memories of one of their favorite teachers. We would like to thank Optimal Hospice and Home Health Care for all of their care and support. We all wish Dale, our father, grandfather, teacher, friend and husband, Fair Winds and Following Seas as he passes on to whatever is next in store for him.
