Betty Lucille Ambelang was born November 28, 1922 at home in Lucas County. She was the youngest child born to Frank F. Ambelang and Mary Sofa Nelson Ambelang. Betty passed away at her home in Corydon on August 18, 2011.

Betty attended country school in Lucas County. As was the custom at the time, Betty lived and worked for a family in Chariton to earn her board while attending high school. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1941.

On March 15, 1942 Betty and her sweetheart, Jimmy Cox, eloped. They were united in marriage at the Christian Parsonage in Princeton, Missouri. To this union five children were born: Larry, Janet, Steven, Bobby and Richard.

Following their marriage, Jimmy and Betty lived and worked in Des Moines. Jimmy joined the U. S. Army in February of 1943 and did his basic training in Camp Beale, California. Following Larry's birth in March, Betty joined Jimmy in California. They lived in Marysville and Hameton until Jimmy was sent overseas. Betty returned to Iowa to live with her parents and await Jimmy's return. Janet was born during this time.

Upon returning from the service, Betty and Jimmy lived in Millerton where Jimmy drove a truck for a living. While living in Millerton, Betty gave birth to their third child, Steven. In 1949 they moved to the Miles farm near Corydon where Bobby and Richard were born making the family complete. The family stayed on the Miles farm until 1964 when they moved to Promise City.

Betty was a homemaker until the late 1950's when she took a job cooking at the South Side Cafe in Corydon. In 1959 Betty accepted a position as a cook at the Wayne County Hospital. After several years working in the kitchen, Betty transferred to the laundry area. She worked 29 years at the hospital retiring in 1988.

During the children's school years, Betty enjoyed her sons' sporting events and teaching Janet home-making skills.

In 1972 Betty and Jimmy bought their home in Corydon where they spent many happy years together. Betty enjoyed her part-time retirement job helping Jimmy mow several cemeteries in Jackson and Howard townships. They took great pride in making sure the grass was trimmed around the headstones and that the cemeteries looked especially nice for Memorial Day.

Betty helped Jimmy with the American Legion Bingo for several years. In addition, they volunteered at the Knoxville Veterans Administration. They enjoyed their monthly breakfast meetings with members of the Legion. A highlight each year was their annual trip to Jimmy's 273rd Army Reunion with their friends, the Hoffmans – one of Jimmy's army buddies.

One of Betty's cherished memories was a trip to the Netherlands in 1979. They visited their son Steven and his family who was stationed at Camp New Amsterdam. While there they visited Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and France. While Jimmy enjoyed revisiting places he'd been during the war, Betty was happiest spending time with family.

After her retirement, Betty joined the Quilt Guild and renewed her interest in quilting. She made 42 hand-pieced quilts for family and friends.

Preceding Betty in death was her husband of 65 years, Jimmy; her sons Bobby Lynn Cox in 1991 and Steven James Cox in 1995; her parents; her brothers Raymond and Nelson Ambelang; and her sisters Clarice Taylor, Martha Smith and Merle Agan.
