Harrison Eugene Havens

US Congressman. He attended school in Franklin County, Ohio, studied law, was admitted to the Ohio bar and started his law practice. He relocated to Illinois and then Iowa and in 1864 he was called to serve in the Civil War as a Captain in Company H of the 47th Iowa Infantry. After the war he went to Missouri where he practiced law and was Editor of the Springfield Patriot. He was elected as a Republican to represent Missouri in the U. S. House of Representatives where he served from 1871 to 1875 and was Chairman of the Committee on Public Expenditures for one term. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress and also to the Missouri State Senate in 1878. In 1881 he petitioned President Garfield for appointment as Territorial Secretary of New Mexico but was unsuccessful. He became active in the formation and management of railroads in Missouri and also served as prosecuting attorney in 1893 and 1894. After the death of his first wife he married Mary Fielding Sallade in New York City. They moved to Enid, Oklahoma Territory where he was editor of the Enid Eagle and was active in efforts to obtain Oklahoma statehood. In 1906 he and Mary moved to Herradura, Cuba where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and served as President of the Cuban National Horticultural Society. He died in Havana, where he had been taken on account of illness. (bio by: John Arsenault)
