Constance Cummings

Actress. She was born in Seattle (Washington). She made her film debut in Howard Hawks’ classic "The Criminal Code." She enjoyed successful stage and film careers on both sides of the Atlantic. She married noted British playwright Benn Wolf Levy (Hitchcock’s Blackmail) in 1933 and moved to the UK. There, her career continued to flourish on screen and on stage. She co-starred with Rex Harrison in the David Lean version of Noel Coward’s "Blithe Spirit." Among her other notable credits were "Seven Sinners" and "Remember Last Night." Constance Cummings joined the National Theater under the direction of Laurence Olivier in 1971 and become a West End Star. She co-starred with Olivier in his production of "A Long Day’s Journey Into Night." She was awarded the C.B.E. (Companion of the British Empire) in 1974 and she won the Tony Award as Best Actress for her 1979 performance in the play "Wings." Her last performance was in 1996 as Vanya's Mother.
