Birth: 1729
Death: Jul. 7, 1797

Irish-born politician, writer and political philosopher. A member of Samuel Johnson's circle, he wrote essays on subjects as diverse as aesthetics and the French Revolution (which he opposed). However, he was no enemy of freedom: he championed the cause of the American colonists and was critical of British administation in Ireland. He was against factionism and patronage in Parliament and believed in a system of political parties. One of British history's most quotable politicians, his most famous epithet being: 'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing'.
