John never married. He enlisted on 27 December 1864 at Boston, Massachusetts as a private for four years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was the son of William Gowen and Nancy Drew, who was born 6 Nov 1818 and died 17 Jan 1896. She was born in Newfield,York,Maine, and burial is at Saco, Maine. COD: Bright's Disease.
