Pulitzer Prize Winning Poet. She was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her penning of "Up Country: Poems of New England" (1973), in which she interpreted the scenic beauty of nature in rural places. From 1981 until 1982, she served as a consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Born Maxine Winokur into a Jewish family, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, her father was a successful pawn broker. Although of Jewish heritage, she attended a local parochial school during her elementary years. She had ambitions of becoming a swimmer, however her father objected. She took to writing and later earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Literature from Radcliffe College in 1946. She followed this up with her Master's degree two-years later. Her love for poetry was ignited after she attended a workshop. It was during this period when she met and became close friends with writer Anne Sexton. The pair would go on to collaborate on several works. She married and raised her three children and in 1961, she made her debut as an accomplished writer with her work "Halfway". Additionally, she taught poetry at several institutions. During her career, she wrote more that thirteen books and earned numerous awards along the way. (bio by: C.S.)
