Gerald E. Foxen

VENTURA Gerald E. Foxen, 83, of 166 East Barnett street died at a Ventura hospital Wednesday after a long illness.

Mr. Foxen was born March 11, 1879, in Foxen Canyon in Santa Barbara County. He was a grandson of William Benjamin Foxen, the pioneer credited with leading General Fremont over the San Marcos Pass to capture Santa Barbara and secure California for the United States.

Mr. Foxen was a carpenter and painter. He worked at the old Mission Church in Ventura for many years. He had lived in Ventura County since 1923.

He leaves his wife, Catherine, to whom he was married for 55 years; two sons, Joseph F., of Los Alamos in Santa Barbara County, and the Rev. Bertin Thomas Foxen, O.F.M., a Franciscan priest of Los Angeles; four daughters, Mrs. Cecelia Getman and Mrs. Margaret Umbro, both of Ojai, Mrs. Ida Taylor, and Mrs. Josephine Neville of Ventura and a brother Edmund, Santa Maria, and two sisters, Mrs. Annie McCartney, Santa Barbara and Mrs. Clara Johnson, Los Alamos and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Solemn Requiem Mass will be offered at the San Buenaventura Mission at 11 a.m. Saturday by Father Foxen, his son. The rosary will be recited at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Chapel at 8 pm Friday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Santa Barbara.
