John Henry Gates was born on Sunday, January 18, 1891 in Palmyra, NY. John Henry's parents, John Gates and Harriet Scott Gates, both born in England in 1856, were the parents of seven children and owned a farm in Manchester, Ontario County, NY in 1900, and in the 1905 N.Y. census relocated to Palmyra, Wayne County, NY. John was the middle child. John's formal schooling ended in the seventh grade. John married his first wife, Louise (aka Eloise) VanDerMortel, in 1912. Her parents were both born in Holland and spoke Dutch. He was 21, she was 18. A daughter, Marguerite L., was born to this union on Tuesday, November 3, 1914.
The 1920 U.S. Census identified John as a laborer for the Garlock Packing Mfg. Co., the 1925 N.Y. census said he was a salesman, the 1930 U.S. Census also said he was a salesman in retail groceries, and the 1940 U.S. census defines his occupation as janitor. In 1930 he was paying monthly rent of $25.
Their daughter, Marguerite, was an attendant at the wedding of Lillian Rowena DeWitt and Harold Rush on Saturday, August 26, 1933 in Palmyra, NY. The other attendant was Harold J. DeWitt, brother of the bride. On Saturday, October 6, 1934, in Palmyra, NY, Marguerite became Mrs. Harold J. DeWitt. Standing for them at this wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rush. Marguerite was 19, Harold DeWitt was 22. John and his wife became grandparents in 1939 with the birth of Russell Gates DeWitt. Harold J. DeWitt was an attendant at a gas station in 1940. He passed away in 1956.
John's wife, Eloise, aka Louise, passed away on Sunday, June 10, 1954. In 1957 in the Gospel Trumpet (Church of God monthly publication) John placed an ad for a housekeeper (see the actual ad above).
The respondent to John's ad who became his housekeeper was Edith Marie Clark Schauer from Erie, PA. She became John's second wife on Wednesday, January 1, 1958, at the Church of God in Ashtabula, OH. Rev. Jay Bentley officiated and one of Edith's son, Homer R. Schauer, provided the music.
They lived briefly in Palmyra, then moved to Edith's house at 3913 Stanton Street in Erie, PA. On Saturday, January 23, 1960, following an illness of several weeks, John passed away at Doctors Osteopathic Hospital in Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA, from medullary paralysis caused by septicemia and uremia due to an abscess on one lung.
