Canadian Politician. He served as Governor-General of Canada from 1967 to 1974. Born in Lacombe, Alberta, he attended the University of Alberta and received a law degree while on a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford. He spent much of his early life practicing law in Toronto. In 1957, he was the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, and would eventually become High Commissioner to India and Canada's first ambassador to Nepal. He was Governor-General during Canada's Centennial in 1967 and created the Order of Canada, the nation's highest honor. Among his achievements as Governor-General was the relaxation of certain traditions in Canadian government, including the abolishing of the curtsy. He also raised national awareness of physical fitness and created an award to honor excellence in Canadian journalism. After he left politics, he would become Chancellor of Queen's University in Toronto and remain active in business endeavors throughout the country. In 1980, a mountain peak in Alberta was named after him.
