John Uel Wardlaw, named for his maternal grandfather, John Uel Wideman, was the son of David Jordan Wardlaw and the former Miss Mildred Elizabeth "Bettie" Wideman.

In December 1886, John married Miss Ida Caroline Morrah, a daughter of David and Rebecca [née Bradley] Morrah. No known children were born to this union.

After Ida died in 1887, John married her younger sister, Lillian "Lillie" Morrah in 1894. This union had three known children:

Elizabeth (1896 – )
David Morrah (1898 – 1944)
