Calvin was born in Clarksville, Mich., the son of John and Esther (Hess) Birman. He moved to Roseburg in the early 1930s.
Calvin served in the Army during World War II.
He married Joyce Walmsley in Medford. They moved to the Sweet Home area in 1955.
He had worked in the woods all his life as a logger. He was a member of the Sweet Home Elks Lodge, a past commander of the Sweet Home VFW, and a past seam squirrel of the Military Order of the Cooties, which does hospital work for veterans. He loved getting up every morning and going to the Elks Lodge for coffee and cribbage. He loved to garden and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Calvin is survived by wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce Birman of Sweet Home; sons John Birman of Lebanon, Richard Birman of Ontario and Edward Birman of San Diego; daughters Jeannine Klopp of Sweet Home and Kathy Seavy of Albany; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers Alvin Birman of Portland and James Birman of Winston; sisters Violet Cole and Kay Page of Weiser, Idaho, and Barbara Birman of Everett, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sons, Kennett and Mark; his parents; brother Richard, and sister June Tankersley.
A memorial dinner will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sweet Home VFW, with the VFW and Elks Lodge officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SafeHaven Humane Society in care of Fisher Funeral Home (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
