Funeral services for Martha Benne, 95, former West Point native, were Saturday, July 1, 2000, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, West Point. Rev. Clint Poppe officiated with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, West Point. Pallbearers were Mark Benne, Bruce Benne, Rodney Rose, Jeff Rose, Blaine Nelson and Dan Schrock. Martha died Thursday, June 29, 2000 in Emerson.


Martha G. Wiechmann was born Oct. 13, 1904, on a farm east of West Point to Heinrich and Katherine (Stigge) Wiechmann. She was baptized at St., Paul Lutheran, West Point, on Dec. 4, 1904. She received her education at a county school and West Point High School through the ninth grade. In 1915, she moved to town with her parents residing at South Niphon Street. She was confirmed on April 13, 1919 at St. Paul. On April 27, 1927, she married Ralph Fredrich Benne. The couple lived in West Point and in 1941 purchased the acreage on the east side of West Point. They lived there until 1985 when they briefly lived in a West Point apartment and then moved to Heritage Home in Emerson. In 1977, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and were married for 64 years before Ralph died on May 15, 1991. Martha worked for the Ed and Henry Bauman Department Store from 1952 until 1970. She was also and active 4-H leader. She was a lifetime member of St.Paul Church and also belonged to the Ladies Aid.


Survivors include three children, Donald Benne of West Point, Deloy Benne and Arla Mae (Mrs. Frank Rose) of Wakefield, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, George, Herman and William Wiechmann, two sisters, Mrs. Christina Wickert and Mrs. Johanna Reimers, a son Ivan, daughter-in-law Dorothy Benne; a grandson, and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Benne was the last member of her generation.
