John Kelley was a resident of Dubuque County, Iowa, when he enlisted Nov. 23, 1863 at the age of 21 years. He mustered into Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry. Was promoted Bugler/Trumpeter Jan. 1, 1865. Mustered out Aug. 8, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

John applied for his pension on Feb. 26 1870. App #153,156 and Cert #197,304. His wife, Nancy, applied for her widow's pension on Dec. 15, 1917. App #1,111,911 and Cert #862,843.

His pension record provides date of death 21 Nov 1917 at McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa.

John married Nancy Bartlett in 1868 (per 1900 Census). Known children: William, Elizabeth, James Austin, Laura, Mary, Eleanor, Edward John, Frederick, Lewis, and Andrew.

After the Civil War the family lived in Clayton County, Iowa. The 1900-1905-1910 Census shows the family relocated to Wisconsin.
