Unheard of cruelty. In Cannelton on November 9, between 8 and 9 in the evening on Adams Street near 7th, Andrew P. (G?) Batson was beaten down by ex-sheritt and now town marshal (not copied) and was injured so severaly by kicking him in the lower body that he died Sunday (13 Nov 1887) morning of the injuries he received. The quarrel between the both of them was based on an earlier election, and degenerated on that eveing ito unbelievable brutality, which finds no equal. After becoming aware of Batson's death (sheriff) underwent a preliminary hearing in front of Squire Heck, where he was put under bond of $3,000 for his appearance in the February term of district court. His charge was premeditaed manslaughter.
A.P. Batson was the oldest son of Capt. Batson living in Anderson Twownship. He was buried Monday afternoon in the family burial plot there. He was approximately 34 (32-35) years old.
