William F. Royse was born in Washington County, the grandson of Frederick Royse early settler and founder of the town of Fredericksburg. William was a farmer and stock raiser and well know citizen of Washington County.

He married Nancy Marshall daughter of James and Catherine Marshall on Jan 12, 1843. He and his wife Nancy raised a large family in the vicinity of Horner's Chapel.

In the 1860 census of Posey Twp, Washington County, William is listed as a 40 year old farmer with $3000. worth of real estate and $1600 worth of personal property, residing with his wife Nancy age 40 and their children: Nancy P. 12, Gabriel T. 11, Eliza J. 8, William F. 6, Cyrus 4 and James M. 14.

In the 1870 census William's real estate value had increased to $6000. and $2000. in personal property, a very prosperous Indiana citizen for his time.
