Charles H. Denton, 88, of Newport, TN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 26, 2014, in the home of his son and family in Charleston, SC.

Charles was born in his family home in New Market, TN on October 27, 1925 as the only child of Virgil Denton and Maude Harrington Denton.

He served with his family on the family farm and then later served in the US Army during WWII. He recently received a Certificate of Honor by the Veterans Association in Charleston, SC. He also retired from both American Enka, Corp. in Morristown and Parks Belk of Newport. Charles was married to Mary Holt Denton on November 17, 1954 after a whirlwind three-month courtship. They were happily married for fifty-nine years and worked together at American Enka and Parks Belk.

They had one son, Charles Jeffrey Denton, of Charleston, SC. Charles loved God first and was a member of the loving Northport Baptist Church. His only other great love was his family, and most especially, his loving wife.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; his only son, Jeff; his daughter-in-love, Prisca; three adoring granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh, Madison Rose, and Mahli Paige; as well as two great-grandsons, Charles Michael and AJ Denton. He will be missed and remembered by his many faithful friends and extended family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Manes Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 31, 2014 in the Manes Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Chris Brady of Northport Baptist Church will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Northport Baptist Church and Hospice of Charleston.

His family wishes to thank all the loving friends of both Newport, TN and Charleston, SC who have made so many gracious calls, visits and tender gestures and who have shared as witnesses to the happy life of this quietly great man, Charles Denton.
