Lumsden "Lum" Townsend died August 8, 1909 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana from trauma, toxemia, and Bright's disease (kidney disease). He was 31 years, 7 months and 9 days old.

He was the son of Charles N. Townsend and Virinda Melissa Winfield Townsend. He had nine siblings: Minnie B. Townsend (1874-?), Charles Marion Townsend (1875-1967), Walter Roy Townsend (1879-1945), Otis E. Townsend (1881-1955), Elsie Margaret Townsend (Smith) (1883-1955), Bertha Isabella Townsend Cress (1885-1957), Hazel M. Townsend (1887-1947), Blanche Townsend (1889-1915), and John Townsend (1891-1949).

He married Della McCoy on September 27 1902 in Miami County, Indiana at the age of 25 years old. To this happy union, they had three children: Raymond, Luster, and Ruby. Of the children, only Ruby V. Townsend Ramer (1905-1993) survives.

He is buried at the Eel River Cemetery next to his beloved grandfather, Joseph Townsend.

Leon (paper has mistaken his name--it should be Lum) Townsend, age 23 years, died yesterday at his home east Sixth street, after an extended illness. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning Services will be conducted at the chapel of the Fetter undertaking establishment at 10 0'clock and the remains interned in Eel River Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Fisher of Mexico will officiate. The deceased was a native of Cass County.
