| Birth: | Nov. 9, 1930 | | Death: | Nov. 16, 1989 | Theologian, Philosopher and Priest. He was born in Portugalete (País Vasco, Spain) and died in El Salvador. He was the rector of the José Simeón Cañas Central America University for over 10 years, , and a gifted intellectual with a fierce commitment to human rights. Outspokenly critical of El Salvador's extreme right and of the military which was using repression to crush its political enemies. Became a strong advocate of a negotiated solution to the war, which won him the enmity of the military and rightist political sectors that supported a strategy of total war. For the last 20 years of his life, was also involved in pastoral work with the poor (in opposition of official policy of the Vatican). He was murdered with other more eight members of the UCA, because they stood up for their rights in opposition to the changes forced by the El Salvadorian government. The Office of AHANA Student Programs' satellite office on the Newton Campus has been named the F. Ellacuría AHANA Resource Center in his honor. Among his books "Filosofía de la Realidad Histórica," "Escritos Políticos, "Escritos Universitarios," and "Escritos Teológicos." (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
