Dr. Alfredo Guillermo Antonetti was born May 11, 1917 in Santiago, Cuba, the first of two sons born to Alfredo R. Antonetti II and Maria Muniz. He had a Catholic upbringing, having attended first the Dolores Jesuit School in Santiago followed by the La Salle Academy in Havana. During Alfredo's childhood his father attended the University of Havana School of Medicine.
After his father's graduation the family moved to Paris, France where Alfredo's father completed additional medical training at the Pasteur Institute. They lived in Paris two years and his mother home schooled him. After the family's return to Cuba in 1930 the political situation was very bad and many schools had been forced to shut down. His mother continued to home school him until The Havana Institute reopened several years later. At the age of 20 he graduated from The Institute (BS degree) and entered the University of Havana School of Medicine. He became a medical doctor in 1943, as did his brother Carlos.
After graduate training he worked as a surgeon at Sacred Heart Clinic Hospital in Havana, an institution that had been founded by his father, who was also professor of medicine at the University of Havana. Alfredo married Gloria Cancio on Christmas day 1944, with whom he had three children, Alfredo, Roberto, and Emilio. In 1955 the Antonetti Clinic Hospital was founded in Havana by Alfredo, his brother Carlos, and their father. In 1960, Alfredo separated from Gloria, and she and the three boys fled the revolution in Cuba at that time and came to the United States. Alfredo stayed in Cuba for two years until the Cuban communist government nationalized and confiscated the Antonetti Clinic Hospital.
He came to the United States in 1962. After a brief stay in Miami, Alfredo moved to Wichita Falls, Texas where he was able to work as a medical assistant at the Wichita Falls State Hospital until he was able to pass all of his exams to once again be able to practice medicine. After passing all exams, which he accomplished in spite of a language barrier, he worked for several years as a surgeon at the Medical and Surgical Clinic in Wichita Falls until moving to Muenster in January 1968. He practiced medicine in Muenster until the age of 86, when he finally decided to retire. At age 93, he moved to Dallas to be close to sons Robert and Al. Alfredo died December 15, 2013, five months before his 97th birthday.
He is survived by his brother, Carlos Antonetti, MD and wife Olga of Houston, three sons, Alfredo Antonetti IV, MD and wife Judy of Dallas, Robert Antonetti, PhD and wife Tamara of Dallas, and Emilio Antonettii, MD and wife Lucy of Pensacola. His grandchildren are Alfred Antonetti V, MD and wife Ruby of Colleyville, Robert S. Antonetti, MD and wife Laura of Colleyville, John Antonetti, MD and wife Faridy of Plano, Ana Marie Antonetti, MD of Pensacola, Gregory Antonetti of Dallas and Andrew Antonetti of Pensacola. His great grandchildren are Alfredo Antonetti VI, Antonio Bo Antonetti, Robert Antonetti III, and Steven Antonetti. Dr. Antonetti was an inspiration to his three children and all his grandchildren to pursue careers in medicine. He spent the last years of his life in retirement taking care of his late ill wife and enjoying the company of his family. Mass of Christian Burial Service was held Saturday, December 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster, Texas.
