John, born in Purmo, Finland & was the oldest son of Johan & Beata Pass, whose other children were: Matt, Jonas, Jacob, Johanna (John Seelund), Louise (Jacob E Wickman) & Gustav (the only family member that remained in Finland.)
Their last name was changed to Blomquist by Matt who preceded all his family in arriving to the
United States. Father Johan died when John was 19 & shortly afterwards he left Finland & arrived
in Metropolitan on May 5, 1890. He worked with the Metropolitan Lumber Company in the mill on
the West Branch of the Sturgeon River.
Maria Lovisa (Johnson) Jacobson was also born in Jeppo & immigrated Dec. 12, 1872. She was the
eldest of 4 sisters Kaisa (Andrew Willman), Anna, (Alex Mattson) & Lisa (Andrew Timmer) & 1 brother (John Romar) born to John Jacobson & wife (died in Finland). The surname of the daughters by custom became "Johnson. Maria began working for her younger sister Kaisa who ran a boarding house.
John & Maria were married in 1894 & first lived in a company house in Milltown.
John made the furniture for their home. They had 5 children here: Mary Alina (George E. Nygard)
1891-1954, Iver John 1896-1966, William Andrew 1897-1956; (Ida Johnson 1897-1945),
Edward Erenus 1899-1957 (Gunhild Carlson) & Esther Louise 1900-1966 (Theodore Anderson
1898-1979).
In 1902 the family left Milltown about 1 1/2 miles west where a home was built on a hill, which is said today to be the highest piece of cultivated land in Michigan.
Seven more children were born in the new home: Rudolph Gustaf 1901-1976 ; (Edith Fostrom),
Carl Theodore 1904-1978 ; (Mabel Lund), Ellen Regina 1907-1925; Gerda Evelyn 1909-1956;
(Edwin A Anderson); Olaf Reynold 1911- Beatrice Lefebvre; Linnea Elvera 1913-1920 & Bernard Emmanuel 1916-1960 (Margaret Casperson)
For 2 years from the birth of Bernard until Mary's marriage in 1918, there were 12 children at home!
The family were active members of Zion Lutheran Church.
In the decade of 1956-1966 there were 7 deaths in the family: Gerda, William, Edward, Bernard, Mary, Esther & Iver. Rudolph died in 1976 & Carl in 1978.

Mrs. John Blomquist, 69, resident of Metropolitan for 50 years, died Friday evening after a fall at her
farm home, which resulted in a cerebral hemorrhage. She died in the General Hospital in Iron Mountain. She was born in Jeppo, Finland & moved directly from the old country to Metropolitan. She arrived 2 years after her husband. They were married in 1893. She is survived by her husband, 3 daughters:
Mrs. George Nygard, Mrs. Theodore Anderson & Mrs. Edwin Anderson; 7 sons: Ivar, Edward, William, Rudolph, Carl, Adolph & Bernard. Three sisters: Mrs. Andrew Willman, Mrs. Alex Mattson &
Mrs. Andrew Timmer and a brother, John Romer.
