She graduated from Eugene High School (later South Eugene High School) in 1957 where she was a member of the school choir. She enjoyed a wide range of popular music and was quite fond of Elvis Presley; her collection of music albums was large. Judy met her future husband, Vernon L. Wynn, while he was visiting Eugene on leave from the United States Navy. They were married on January 10, 1958 in a small private ceremony at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church at 8th and Monroe Streets, officiated by the Reverend Leo M. Thornton.
Now a military spouse, Judy joined Vernon at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington state, where they were billeted in married enlisted quarters. They later moved to California when Vernon was assigned to Naval Air Station Miramar, as an aviation electronics technician; and to the U.S.S. Hancock aircraft carrier, the ship based out of San Diego, CA. Their residence was located at 766 West 17th Avenue in Escondido, CA. Due to his assignment on-board the ship and deployment schedule at sea, Judy was separated from her husband for sometimes weeks or months at a time.
Judy suffered from medical issues during this time and also miscarried during pregnancy in the early part of their marriage. She ultimately gave birth to a baby daughter, Melody Ann, on November 20, 1960 at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, CA. Unfortunately, the birth was difficult due to Neonatal Encephalopathy, caused by the umbilical cord being wrapped around the neck of the infant. This caused a severe lack of oxygen from which Melody was unable to recover. She lived about four hours before succumbing to her injuries. Judy and her husband accompanied Melody as she was brought to Eugene, OR, where she was interred at Rest Haven Memorial Park on November 25, 1960. The Reverend Vance H. Webster, senior minister of the First Baptist Church of Eugene, OR, officiated the graveside service.
After the death of her daughter, Judy suffered from severe postpartum depression. Vernon, believing that his military deployments were a contributing factor to his wife’s condition, requested an early discharge from the U.S. Navy. It was denied. He then appealed to the U.S. Senator of his home state, Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota. The Senator successfully intervened and was able to facilitate Vernon’s discharge from the military. Judy and her husband then relocated from California to Eugene, OR, where they would be closer to Judy’s family. There, she later gave birth to her son, Anthony Lee, on November 15, 1962. He was born prematurely by nearly a month and spent several weeks in an incubator until he was strong enough to be discharged. The couple lived variously at 1850 River Road and 1520 Chambers Street in Eugene, OR, and at 245 South 37th Street in Springfield, OR.
Judy was preceded in death by her daughter Melody Ann Wynn. She was survived by her husband Vernon L. Wynn and son Anthony L. Wynn of Springfield, OR; parents Dennyson and Florence Knight, sisters Sharon Knight and Patricia Knight Cogburn, and grandmother Irene Roberts, all of Eugene, OR.
She was interred at Rest Lawn Memorial Park on October 12, 1968, following a graveside service officiated by the Reverend M. Max Morgan, of the First Evangelical Church (formerly the First Evangelical United Brethren Church), Eugene, OR.
