Bertha Boger Kluttz, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, following a period of declining health.
A celebration of Bertha's life will begin at 3:00pm Monday, January 20, 2014 at St. James Reformed Church, corner of College and Walnut streets in Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Gene Frady will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at Gordon Funeral Home, 8559 Cook Street, Mt. Pleasant, (704) 436-9915.
A Cabarrus County native, Bertha was the youngest of seven children born to the late George Atlas Boger and Vernina Cline Boger. She was predeceased by her three brothers Otis, and wife, Pauline; Ray, and wife, Rachel; and Charlie M. Boger; two sisters, Edith B. Whitley Moser, and husbands, Raymond Whitley and James Moser; and Ida Mae Boger; a sister-in-law by marriage, Mary Lee Yount Kluttz, and two brothers-in-law by marriage, Marvin D. Swaringen, Jr., and George Edgar Kluttz, Sr.
Bertha was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and had worked for Kaiser-Roth Hosiery Mill. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who lived her faith daily. Her ever-green thumb with flowers and vegetables gave her plenty to can, freeze and share with others. She was known for her perfectly roasted and salted pecans that were staples of family reunions and church suppers. Her joy in sharing them rivaled the delight of those lucky enough to taste them. She enjoyed traveling across the United States and kept meticulous journals that documented with words and labeled pictures fun adventures with family and friends.
She was a charter member of the American Legion Post 301 Auxiliary and served as secretary-treasurer for many years. She also was a member of the former Mt. Pleasant Fireman's Auxiliary. She was active in the St. James Church Women, holding leadership positions through the years, and serving on the Altar Guild.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Arthur Lee Kluttz, of the home; a son, Lee Allen Kluttz, and wife, Jannette Barnhardt Kluttz, of Mt. Pleasant; a granddaughter, Lindsey Lee Kluttz, and fiance, Adam Love, both of Mt. Pleasant; two grandsons, Alexander Dale Kluttz of Burke, Va., and Kaleb Allen Kluttz of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister, Mary Margaret Boger Kluttz of Rockwell. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Miriam K. Swaringen, and brother-in-law, Carl Dwight Kluttz, Sr., both of Mt. Pleasant, and a host of nieces and nephews in the Kluttz, Boger and Swaringen families.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Bertha's memory be made to St. James Reformed Church, P.O. Box 447, Mt. Pleasant, NC, 28124.
