Dubuque Herald obituary, November 4, 1860

Decease of Mark Beaubien. -It is with much regret that we are called on to notice the death of one of our old and well-known citizens - Mark Beaubien, jun.

He was born Jan. 19, 1819 at Monroe Co.,Michigan. In 1828 he removed to Chicago and remained there till 1845 - being engaged in company with his brother Josph Beaubien, Esq., in the dry goods business. In 1854 the brothers went to Rock Island and opened a livery establishment, and at the end of two years they came to Dubuque and engaged in the same business - They continued in the livery business until 1857, when they purchased the Peaslee-thenceforth known as the Beaubien House. They continued here two years, disposed of the business and engaged in the livery. Last winter they disposed of this and Mark Beaubien went to St. Joseph, Mo., where he opened another livery stable.

One week last Wednesday he undertook to drive a fractious team belonging to somebody else. They became uncontrollable, and ran away. In his efforts to stop them one of the reins broke, and concluding there was more danger to be apprehended from being in than out, the carriage, he jumped out. Instead of jumping straight forward he struck the ground sideways and broke one of his legs above the ankle in a terrible manner-driving the bone completely through the flesh. He was conveyed home and the best of medical assistance procured. At first there were strong hopes of his recover, but mortification ensued and amputation was deemed necessary.

The operation was performed last Friday; but he survived it only long enough to be removed from the table to his bed. His remains reached here yesterday morning under charge of his brother Joseph. He will not be interred until to-day, in accordance with his request that his body should not be buried until after it had been here two days. He will be interred by the side of his second wife in the Catholic Cemetery.

He was twice married, and was to have been married again to-morrow to a lady at St. Joseph. His first wife was from Mercer County and the second from DuPage Co., Illinois. He leaves four children, two sons and two daughters.
His demeanor through all his painful illness and the terrible operation whic preceded his death was calm, patient and unflinching.

His social life is too well known to need special mention. We need only say that he was generous, widely known, respected and well-liked by all who knew him. His death seems to every man like that of a friend-his untimely departure has saddened the hearts of the entire community. Chicago papers please notice.

*********
Researchers record his first wife as Sarah Jane Wilson with whom he had children: Alice (1839) and Oscar (1842). With second wife, Aurelia: Joel (1848) and Fanny (1852).
